“BEST FRICKIN’ TEA PARTY ever!” Morgan held up her hand for a high-five from Grace. They had each finished a tuna sandwich and a fruit bowl in the jungle, and were now lying back on one of Grandma Lauder’s patchwork quilts, enjoying the grasslands of Africa.

“Best frickin’ tea party in the history of tea parties!” Grace slapped her niece’s hand, sharing in the exuberance.

They traveled the rest of the afternoon. The day was nearly over when they realized they had used the last of the milk from the lamp.

“One more time?” Morgan requested, and Grace filled the lamp for one last adventure. It was almost time for Ginger to arrive to pick up Morgan for the evening.

But the kitchen remained the kitchen. The magic was over.

“Oh, Auntie Grace. We had one lamp’s full of free passes to some of her memories. Do you think we’ll ever get another invite?”

“I don’t know. I suppose we’ll have to schedule more tea parties. After today, my sweet—I think anything is possible.”

“Grandma Lauder had a heck of a life,” Morgan said.

“She must have carried that lamp around with her everywhere. We were pouring just a few of her memories into our tea. Imagine what else she has to show us,” Grace said, and Morgan smiled at such a romantic notion. As the two women sat at the table, exhausted from globe trekking, they heard a familiar voice from the front of the house.

“Anybody alive in here?” Ginger hollered. Grace and Morgan laughed at the complexity of such a question. Grace’s baby sister—Morgan’s mother, joined them on the back porch for a brief visit. Ginger was always in such a rush, but Grace didn’t have any objection today. Especially since she and Morgan were having a heck of a time making up an excuse for why they were so worn out.

Ginger shot both of them an exasperated look. “Alright, fine, you two. Let’s go, Morgan.” Hugs were exchanged by the sisters, then kisses and hand holding between Grace and Morgan. Ginger’s lemon yellow VW backed out of Grace’s driveway. Before the car reached the street, Grace turned back to the sound of her niece’s voice.

“Auntie!” she hollered, leaning out of the passenger window. “Do you smell that?”

Grace lifted her nose to the evening air. She nodded and smiled back at her beautiful niece.

Gardenias!
